SAFER SAILING with MAGIC MARINE Safety Spreader Bar
The Principle
The safety spreader bar can be compared with a car airbag which you use it might use once in a lifetime in an extreme situation so it has to be reliable. Because of that we aimed to make a safety hook that will work in the most awkward situation, for example when stuck in your trampoline after capsizing or caught by ropes after capsizing your dinghy. In addition it is ‘clean’ and lightweight, not ‘bulky’. This spreader can be adapted onto an existing harness to make it compliant with the ISAF Racing Rule of Sailing 40.2 requiring that by January 1, 2006 a trapeze or hiking harness shall have a device capable of quickly releasing the competitor from the boat at all times while in use.
Key Features:
Reliable:
After releasing the pin, the hook will disconnect from the spreader bar no matter what the direction is of the force on the hook. The ball shape on the end of the hook prevents side loading which can cause the hook to remain in place after releasing the pin, the hook itself won’t release!
Clean:
The tight neoprene cover provides a clean design which prevents the hook from getting caught after it has been released.
Lightweight and Strong:
The safety system is mounted on the Magic Marine ‘tube’ spreader which is thin, light and strong. The dimensions of the complete safety spreader won’t block any forward movement of the upper body and makes the spreader comfortable when bending forward compared to plate-designed spreaders. There is very little added weight compared to a standard spreader.
The pin to release the hook is attached to a dyneema rope. This construction cuts the force needed to release the hook in half.
Versatile:
The standard safety spreader comes in two sizes and fits on any harness with webbing less than 40mm and the buckles located on the side of the harness.
The standard safety spreader comes in sizes S-M with a total width of 26 cm and sizes L-XL with a total width of 30cm.
There is also a safety spreader in 2 sizes specially designed for the Ultimate harness. |
